This category recognizes an individual, charity, community group or company who has worked to make a positive difference in the local, state, national, or global community.  This individual, charity, community group or company should have worked toward the enhancement of wellbeing for communities.

This is the only award that recognises ‘unsung heroes’ that have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to deliver initiatives that transform and empower marginalised communities.

Dr. Kwadwo Adusei-Asante

Nyat Mulugeta

Kwadwo Adusei-Asante is a Senior Lecturer in Social Science at Edith Cowan University (ECU). He was recently nominated for the ECU Vice-Chancellor Award for pioneering projects that enhance students’ learning.

In his role at ECU, Kwadwo established a peer mentoring program that supports African students struggling academically. The program has resulted in the retention of over a hundred African students who have gone on to pursue fulfilling careers. Kwadwo also pioneered ECU’s AIM HIGHER Summit, which encourages African youth to pursue higher education. In 2018, he established an educational centre in Malaga to provide Maths, English, and Science support to African high school students in Perth. Kwadwo is also the only African involved in a ground-breaking international research project that is developing a globally-endorsed glossary of terminology for human lactation.

A mentor, teacher, and role model, Kwadwo advocates on behalf of African students facing dismissal from their respective courses of study, a testament to his belief that education is a social mobility catalyst.

Kwadwo is dedicated to empowering the community to solve its own challenges, using education as a vehicle.
