Africa Centre

Our Vision for the African Centre.

As the umbrella body representing African communities in Western Australia, the OACWA is uniquely positioned to lead the establishment of a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable African Community Centre. This Centre will serve as a home that celebrates culture, empowers families, supports youth, and connects generations.

African Centre Master plan.

To effectively establish the WA African Community Centre, OACWA will adopt a structured, multi-phase development strategy that aligns with the long-term vision while ensuring financial and operational sustainability. Our Phased Development Approach include:

Land Acquisition

  • Secure a centrally located parcel of land suitable for long-term development and community access.
  • Work with local government and developers to identify affordable or donated land options.

Initial Infrastructure (Medium Hall + Office)

  • Construct a medium-sized multipurpose hall and administrative offices to begin operations and provide immediate space for meetings, training, and services.
  • Enable early-stage programs such as youth workshops, aged care support (seniors support), and cultural events.

Expanded Community Hall

  • Build a larger community hall to host festivals, ceremonies, and major gatherings.
  • Include break-out rooms for workshops, education sessions, counselling, and language classes.

Sporting and Recreation Complex

  • Develop a sports and recreation hub, including indoor and outdoor facilities to encourage youth engagement, physical wellbeing, and social inclusion.

Provide space for local teams, African sports leagues, and wellness activities and where young generation can call “home” and use for various sporting needs to strengthen the community at all levels.

Why We Need an African Centre

OACWA’s success has outgrown its current home at the OACWA Hub in Nollamara, which now welcomes over 200 visitors weekly. The facility is:

Too small and consistently overbooked

Unable to meet the demand for bookings

Unsuitable for large events, celebrations, and community programs

What the African Centre Will Do

  • Celebrate Culture – Festivals, music, dance, and storytelling
  • Empower Youth & Elders – Mentoring, leadership, and intergenerational programs
  • Support Families – Mental health, employment, parenting, and education initiatives
  • Reduce Isolation – Welcoming spaces for seniors, migrants, and vulnerable individuals
  • Promote Integration – Settlement support, civic participation, and intercultural engagement
  • Unite the Community – Shared space for over 54 African nationalities in WA
  • Build Capacity – Training, networking, and community-led programs
  • Support Economic Growth – Small business incubation, entrepreneurship, and job pathways
  • Increase Visibility – A proud symbol of African Australian identity
  • Celebrate Unity – National day events, cultural exhibitions, and community gatherings

The African Centre will not only meet current needs but also inspire future generations by providing a strong foundation for cultural pride, social cohesion, and collective empowerment.
