JAMBO AFRICA 2023 FESTIVAL
Media Release
The Largest Jambo Africa Festival, held on the 4-5 March 2023, brought the WA African Community and members to life again after the state sustained effects from COVID-19.
The CBD Revitalisation Grant Program mainly funded the Jambo Africa Festival 2023 through the State Government’s CBD Revitalisation Program. Other sponsors included Lotterywest, the Office of Multicultural Interests, and the City of Perth.
Joe Tuazama, OACWA’s Immediate Past President, acknowledged the Hon. John Carey MLA for introducing the CBD Revitalisation Grant Program and said that WA African Community residents and businesses are still feeling the festival’s success. “The Jambo Africa Festival 2023 was a fantastic event and a huge success attracting approximately 20,000 attendees over the whole weekend and has created a real buzz around Perth City, all made possible by the CBD Revitalisation Grant Program”.
To reaffirm the WA State Government’s commitment to revitalise Perth and continuously promote multiculturalism, the Hon. Amber-Jade Sanderson MLA represented the government along with many state and federal members of parliament, mayors and other dignitaries.
The two-day friendly festival was full of kids’ activities, entertainment, exhibitions, activities, speakers, non-stop live music, and a fantastic menu featuring diverse Afro-European foods and condiments.
Jambo Africa Festival 2023 was a buzz with activities in which local businesses and community groups participated. Local businesses and community groups engaged with the festival and owned it, which is what we aimed for.
The sound and vibe of the African spirit attracted an impressive array of local CBD residents. “We are excited to host such a colourful event in our City and enjoyed it.” Liam Gobbert, Deputy Mayor of the City of Perth, said.
The festival ended on a high note, and OACWA Executive President Dr Casty Nyaga praised the efforts of all involved in the festival as she looked towards the future. “I send heartfelt thanks to all involved in the curating and organisation of Jambo Africa Festival 2023. Attracting such high-calibre and well-known guests, community members, speakers, and performers. It has renewed the focus on building a vibrant, visible African community in WA. The festival captured the African spirit of Ubuntu. Thanks, and see you all at Jambo 2024.”
